Halfway there in Guatemala

Work continues on the project. We were slowed slightly by a stomach bug that swept through the team on Monday but most are recovered or recovering. It’s fun listening to the team members learn some Spanish words and use them on the work site. They know how to ask the Guatemalans if more mortar is needed among other things. Gio has become our expert stair cutter along with Gus and Krit. They are cutting out the stairs for a walkway from the dirt hill which will then have concrete and stone put on it. James is one of our expert mortar mixers along with Asher. Others enjoy switching from job to job… whether it’s digging a trench or placing stones in the mortar for the retaining wall. Today Phoebe, Hudson and Gio went to a local school to share the Jesus film with the students. During free time, the students have enjoyed walking down our steep driveway to the tienda (store) at the bottom of the hill to buy snacks. They are quickly learning which Guatemalan snacks are the favorites. Taqueritos (chips) and Sponch (cookies) top the list so far. They also have chess tournaments. No one can beat Joey. Last night we talked about our highs and lows. While everyone agreed that being sick was a definite low, the highs included lots of the foods that Mrs Holschen has been making for the team. Pizza pockets were a big hit! Time is moving quickly. Today is our halfway point from arriving on the field til leaving for debrief. We are excited to see what God will accomplish in the second half of our time here.

The market was fun. The Lord has worked in me. I enjoy the KP. My favorite part of the day is going to sleep. -Nathaniel E

I have enjoyed everything. I have seen the Lord in our work. I enjoy making mortar. I say Mas mortero to see if the workers need us to make more. -James Bradley B

The work is tiring. Cutting out the stairs is an interesting job. I’m having a good time. The youth event last Saturday was really fun. I didn’t understand any of the sermon on Sunday but the church experience was pretty cool. It was loud though! The guy we talked to after had a really cool story. The market was pretty cool too. We met a national who used to live in Nebraska at the market. -Krit B

All the people are really nice. The food is really good. The Guatemalan snacks are amazing! It’s been a good time. The wall is almost done! -Aiden R

It’s amazing working with the Guatemalans and seeing the cultural differences. -Joey B
